Free Workshop | Accessing Facebook and Social Media – Vocal Eye

Sunday July 14, 2019 from 1 pm to 5 pm at the Arts Club BMO Studio, 162 W 1st Avenue, Vancouver  |


This introduction to Social Media is designed to demystify the workings of Facebook for users with sight loss. Perfect for first-time users and for current users who want to get more out of their experience.


Attendees must bring their own devices: smartphone, tablet or laptop. Please specify which device you’ll bring and what access technology you currently use.

Instructors Monty Lilburn and Albert Ruel will lead participants through a practical hands-on session that includes the following topics:


Part 1

  • Facebook terminology (timeline, profile, friends, pages, groups, likes, loves and emojis)
  • Facebook Mobile vs full site
  • privacy set up
  • demonstrations
  • Q and A

Part 2


The group will be divided for hands-on practice according to interest and experience level. Content will be tailored accordingly. For example:

  • adjust privacy levels and other settings
  • practice searching for people, groups and pages
  • how to like, follow, join, comment and post
  • connect with new people, groups and pages
  • share tips and resources

Monty Lilburn has worked in the IT industry for over two decades including the areas of education and Assistive Technology. Monty looks forward to helping participants embrace social media.


Albert A. Ruel is the Program Coordinator for the Canadian Council of the Blind‘s Get Together with Technology (GTT) program. Since experiencing total sight loss and leaving the pulp and paper industry in 1990, Albert has lived his passion in the field of access technology for people who are blind, partially sighted and deaf-blind primarily, as well as in the cross-disability sector.

Since June 1992 he has enjoyed a varied career in the not-for-profit vision loss and cross-disability rehabilitation, technology training and advocacy sectors. Albert holds a Social Service Worker Certificate from Vancouver Island University and a Personnel and Supervisory Management Diploma from Douglas College. He is passionate about helping people connect with their needs and is well-known for his solution-focused, flexible, positive attitude and a great sense of humour.
