CCB-GTT PRESENTATION CALL

Wednesday April 27, 2022, 1:00 PM Eastern/10:00 AM Pacific:

Host: Kim Kilpatrick

Presenter: Michael Feir

Topic: Using the focus mode on IOS.

Description: We all get distracted by our iPhones. The answer used to be to turn on “do not disturb”. This would prevent notifications from being announced and prevent pretty much everyone from contacting you. Apple has improved upon this with a new feature called “Focus”. That is where “do not disturb” went to hide on everyone. It is now one of several different focus modes. You can take far more control over what apps can disturb you. and who can contact you when you are busy. There is more of a learning curve which comes with this increased flexibility. Together, we will explore how to customize and even create your own focus modes. We will also learn how to take control of this new addition to iOS.

CCB-GTT NATIONAL CALL

Wednesday, November 10, 2021, 7:00 PM Eastern/4:00 PM Pacific:

Host: Kim Kilpatrick

Presenter: Neal Ewers

FROM PRINT TO VOICE: THE MAKING OF AN AUDIO BOOK

In this presentation I will cover the steps needed to produce an audio book. I will answer such questions as:

  • Does one self-publish or go with a book publisher?
  • How does one find the right narrator, and how much does that cost?
  • What studio is used to record the book? How much does that cost?
  • What is the process of reading the book? Who is involved?
  • What if there are mistakes or parts to be re-read?
  • How do you prepare the finished recording for places like Audible.com and other companies?
  • What is a DAISY book and why is it used?
  • How is the finished audio book marketed?

Along the way:

  • We will hear professional narrators talk about the ways one brings a book to life, along with some things not to do.
  • We will hear and discuss certain sentences and phrases and how using different vocal intonation can make a very big difference in the way the words are interpreted by the reader.
  • There will also be a demonstration of how books are edited to correct mistakes in the reading, take out or diminish breath sounds, plosives, and other things that may detract from the reading.
  • There will be a time for questions at the end of the presentation.

Some possible questions to ponder:

  • As a reader, do I hear what the author intended, or am I more influenced by the narrator’s interpretation of the book?
  • Are there narrators you like and why do you like them?
  • What equipment is needed to make a high quality recording of a book?
  • Other questions are welcome.

I hope you enjoy the session.

Check out Neal’s work is at https://www.ravenswood.org

CCB-GTT PRESENTATION

Wednesday, September 29, 2021, 1:00 PM Eastern/10:00 AM Pacific:

Host: Kim Kilpatrick

Presenter: Michael Feir

The latest version of iOS has just been released. There are hundreds of changes. Michael Feir will explain some of his favourites so far. For people feeling that rotor frustration, relief is a two finger four-tap away. VoiceOver now has quick settings which make it easy to access a wide range of convenient settings without using the rotor. Notes has gotten a new organization method called tags which helps keep things straight without making lots of folders. The Weather app has gotten a complete makeover and packs more information. Michael will show you how a new VoiceOver feature called group navigation can turn the sprawl into a quick and tidy experience.

Saturday, Sept 25, 2021, 1:00 PM Eastern/10:00 AM Pacific:

Braille Literacy Canada presentation

Presenters Jen Jesso and Jen Goulden

Topic: Duxbury for Braille Readers

The Duxbury Braille Translator (DBT) is probably the most well-known braille transcription software in the world, and it can produce high-quality braille in more than 100 languages. It’s also extremely accessible, enabling braille readers to play an active role in creating our own electronic or hard copy braille documents.

All are welcome, but the focus of this session will be on using Duxbury with a screen reader and braille display. We hope you can join us!

(NOTE) To register, send an email to info@blc-lbc.ca up until the start of the workshop. The zoom credentials (different from those used by CCB GTT) will be sent to those who register.

CCB members get in free to BLC workshops.
