IMAGE (Internet Multi-Modal Access to Graphical Exploration) Project

As is well known, the vast majority of internet graphics are not accessible to non-visual users.  To tackle this problem, McGill University’s Shared Reality Lab, in strategic partnership with the Canadian Council of the Blind (CCB) and Gateway Navigation CCC Ltd, is working on the IMAGE project, funded by Innovation Science Economic Development Canada through the Assistive Technology Program.

The project’s objective is to develop multi-modal feedback (audio and touch) tools enabling users to gain a deeper understanding of internet graphics than is presently available to blind, deaf-blind, or low vision users.  The project team is actively recruiting participants, inviting volunteers to complete the on-line survey (available both in English and French), to work with the researchers in developing tools to facilitate graphical exploration on the internet.

CCB-BLC INFORMATION SESSION WITH CELA & NNELS

Thursday March 18, 2021, 7:00 PM Eastern/4:00 PM Pacific:

You may have heard that the federal government intends to phase out its $4 million in financial support of the Centre for Equitable Library Access (CELA) and the National Network for Equitable Library Services (NNELS) over the next few years.

Braille Literacy Canada (BLC) and the Canadian Council of the Blind (CCB) will be hosting a one hour information session, including representatives from CELA and NNELS, to provide you with more information about this situation and how you can help.

These cuts will have devastating effects to Canadians who are blind, visually impaired or deafblind across Canada. Publishers do not produce braille books. And while publishers make a small selection of works available in audio (thanks to the popularity of services such as Audible), it that amounts to less than 10% of what is published in any given year. CELA/NNELS help to fill that gap.

At the information session, Laurie Davidson, Executive Director of CELA, Daniella Levy-Pinto, Project Coordinator of NNELS, and Anthony Tibbs, Treasurer of BLC, will provide more information on the impact that these cuts will have on CELA/NNELS, and what you can do to help change the federal government’s direction.

(NOTE) The session will take place in the BLC Zoom room – details to be provided upon registration. Preregistration is required by March 17, 2021. register at info@blc-lbc.caa
