Wednesday November 1, 2023,

1:00 PM Eastern/10:00 AM Pacific:

Host: Kim Kilpatrick

Presenter: Michael Feir

Description: For many blind people, Braille is vital. They prefer to type in Braille and read in Braille rather than using a touchscreen and synthetic speech. This is quite possible using VoiceOver on your iPhone. Apple offers extensive support for using their products with Braille displays. This week, we’ll focus on what’s possible when you connect a Braille display via Bluetooth to your iPhone. We’ll also discuss Braille screen input which lets you type on the touchscreen as if it were a Braille keyboard. We’ll also go over some pitfalls of using Braille with your iPhone.

This course is based on the second edition of Michael Feir’s free e-book, Personal Power: Getting the Most From iOS as a Totally Blind User. This book can be downloaded in several formats from: Michael Feir’s Blog: April 2022

People who have trouble downloading the book in the format of their choice should email Michael directly at: Michael.feir@gmail.com

IMAGE (Internet Multi-Modal Access to Graphical Exploration) Project

As is well known, the vast majority of internet graphics are not accessible to non-visual users.  To tackle this problem, McGill University’s Shared Reality Lab, in strategic partnership with the Canadian Council of the Blind (CCB) and Gateway Navigation CCC Ltd, is working on the IMAGE project, funded by Innovation Science Economic Development Canada through the Assistive Technology Program.

The project’s objective is to develop multi-modal feedback (audio and touch) tools enabling users to gain a deeper understanding of internet graphics than is presently available to blind, deaf-blind, or low vision users.  The project team is actively recruiting participants, inviting volunteers to complete the on-line survey (available both in English and French), to work with the researchers in developing tools to facilitate graphical exploration on the internet.
