CCB-GTT NATIONAL CALL
Wednesday, November 10, 2021, 7:00 PM Eastern/4:00 PM Pacific:
Host: Kim Kilpatrick
Presenter: Neal Ewers
FROM PRINT TO VOICE: THE MAKING OF AN AUDIO BOOK
In this presentation I will cover the steps needed to produce an audio book. I will answer such questions as:
- Does one self-publish or go with a book publisher?
- How does one find the right narrator, and how much does that cost?
- What studio is used to record the book? How much does that cost?
- What is the process of reading the book? Who is involved?
- What if there are mistakes or parts to be re-read?
- How do you prepare the finished recording for places like Audible.com and other companies?
- What is a DAISY book and why is it used?
- How is the finished audio book marketed?
Along the way:
- We will hear professional narrators talk about the ways one brings a book to life, along with some things not to do.
- We will hear and discuss certain sentences and phrases and how using different vocal intonation can make a very big difference in the way the words are interpreted by the reader.
- There will also be a demonstration of how books are edited to correct mistakes in the reading, take out or diminish breath sounds, plosives, and other things that may detract from the reading.
- There will be a time for questions at the end of the presentation.
Some possible questions to ponder:
- As a reader, do I hear what the author intended, or am I more influenced by the narrator’s interpretation of the book?
- Are there narrators you like and why do you like them?
- What equipment is needed to make a high quality recording of a book?
- Other questions are welcome.
I hope you enjoy the session.
