Meet the luggage tags that beep

Happy New Year everyone!

Hi there!  It’s Donna and thank you for allowing me to come into your inbox.

Today, I’d like to talk about luggage tags that beep.

Meet the luggage tags that beep

Yes, these tags sure work and they are quite handy for anyone; especially so for a blind person.

When you are in a busy airport, or at a conference, and you need to depend on someone sighted to help you identify your luggage, then the beeping luggage tags come in very handy.  How do they work?

You attach the tags to your luggage and then you have a remote that you can press that will pick up the encoded tags on your luggage.  It beeps to within 50 feet of where you are.

You can also use this little gadget or device for other purposes.  Just use your imagination and see what you can come up with.  All I know is that I can use it when I travel and am in airports or train stations or even at hotels.

I am happy to endorse this nifty little gadget as I constantly use it when I travel to navigate to my hotel room.

I hang the tag on the door of my hotel room and then I use the transponder to locate the tag on the door.  There is a beeping sound that is emitted when the transponder is pressed.  You can hear the beep as you get closer.

So go out there and make friends with the luggage tags that beep.

That’s it from me for this week.

A scam alert

Happy New Year everyone!

Hi there!  It’s Donna and thank you for allowing me to come into your inbox.

Today, I’d like to introduce you to my scam alert.

A scam alert

You have been chosen

This is one of the more common scams going around these days and if you are not careful or paying attention you can be easily taken in.

More often than not you receive a phone call telling you that you have been chosen for a phone survey.

I would say; ignore this phone call and hang up as quickly as you can.

More often than not it is with an airline or well known cruise line  company and if you choose to indulge this call in quick time you’ll be asked for your credit card details and banking details

Along with some personal preferences.

What could happen if you choose to go along with this phone call?

If you choose to divulge these then look out!

They’ll be used against you to hack your account.

Remember!  These calls could be in the form of either a recording or a live person.

Some important points to keep in mind:

You need to remember that scams come in the following formats:

As emails, as phone calls both recorded and via a live caller, and o yes!  It can even show up at your door and in your mailbox.

And now they are targeting us through texts being sent to our cell phones.

Before giving you the latest scams making the rounds; we have some do nots to share with you.

Do not respond to emails that look strange to you.

Do not download attachments from unknown senders.

Do not share your username and password to your online banking and any other online payments facilities with anyone.

Do not give out any banking or personal details on the phone to unknown callers.

Do not pay any attention to threats from automated phone recordings or from live persons with regard to your credit card or that you owe money to any revenue agency.

Do not entertain any offers either via email or by phone from senders and callers offering incredible service packages as they may pertain to cable and tv services, prizes that you have won, or any sort of any type of service package.

Do not answer the door to unknown callers.

Take extra caution to make sure that the details of your credit cards and debit cards are fully protected when you make payments at restaurants or at stores, pharmacies, and elsewhere.

Do not enter your password for Facebook or Twitter in response to a text request on your cell phone.

The same if you are asked for your Apple ID.

Do not fall prey to a text message telling you that your banking details have been compromised online.

That’s it from me for this week.

If you would like to become a member of  my CCB Mysteries chapter you can do so for the price of $10 annually and in return you will receive unlimited access to either of the following libraries.

Privacy protection

Happy New Year everyone!

Hi there!  It’s Donna and thank you for allowing me to come into your inbox.

Today, I’d like to introduce you to my tip on privacy protection.

Privacy protection

We are constantly striving to protect ourselves from scams and scammers, but most of all we need to ensure that our privacy, confidentiality, and independence are kept safe from prying eyes and those who thrive on destroying our right to these precious commodities.

Paying at the supermarket or at any type of store

Usually there are three methods of payment and you should probably choose the one that best suits you.

  1. Via cash: Make sure that when you open your wallet that you do not open it up too wide so that prying eyes could see or read what you have in it.

  1. Via credit card: Here is where you need to ensure that when you enter your pin number that you do it yourself.

Chances are that the helpful cashier or sales person would be willing to help but better be safe than sorry.  Make sure to ensure that you cover the screen or the keypad so that no one can see what you are entering.

  1. Using your debit card. This is probably the most risky of the three methods in that you would need to enter more info than in option 2. Not just your pin number, but the type of account that you are withdrawing from.

Chances are that the cashier or sales rep could be counted on to keep your info private but if you are concerned then it is probably best to take a trusted person along with you when you go shopping.

Be sure to destroy all of your receipts when you arrive home so that they do not get into the wrong hands.

That’s it from me for this week!

Apps round up

Happy New Year everyone!

Hi there!  It’s Donna and thank you for allowing me to come into your inbox.

Today, I’d like to introduce you to my apps round up.

  1. Blindfold Doggy (iOS, Free With In-App Purchases)

Blindfold Doggy is a fully accessible dog ownership simulation game, for both sighted and visually impaired people, designed for rapid audio play. The object of the game is care for your dog: the better you care for your dog, the more points you’ll score.

After learning the sounds your dog makes when he needs something, you must take care of your dog: feed him, walk him, give him water, brush him and play with him.

For example, to walk your dog, put on his collar and leash, open the door and start walking: swipe down with one finger. Each down swipe takes you one step further from home. Each up swipe takes you one step closer to home. When you leave the house for a walk, the front door automatically closes behind you. To go back inside, walk back to the door and open it. Make sure you close the door, or your dog may run away.

Once you’ve mastered taking care of one dog, try taking care of two. It’s much harder!

Then try the adventure game – go shopping for new toys and food, and take your dog to the veterinarian for routine checkups.

The game comes with limited play before you run out of food. To get unlimited play, or other options, use the in-app upgrades.

Current Version: 1.5.5 (October 26, 2018)

Out Of Tune is a live music game where you compete to win a cash prize. All you need to do is correctly guess 10 songs. The game is played every weekday at 8PM Eastern Time / 5PM Pacific Time and 11PM Eastern Time / 8PM Pacific Time.

Meet the raised line drawing board

Happy holidays everyone!

Hi there!  It’s Donna and thank you for allowing me to come into your inbox.

Today, I’d like to talk about the raised line drawing board.

Meet the raised line drawing board

I got introduced to this gem a few months ago and it is a perfect goodie for those kids who are interested in drawing their very own pictures.  It is a perfect way for anyone who is blind to use their imagination to put pen to paper so to speak.

How does this goodie work?  Well, it is just an 8 and a half by 11 board.  Place your sheet of paper on this board and then use any ball point pen to do the rest.  When you draw you can then feel how it comes out on the sheet of paper.  It comes out in raised format for you to feel.

Quite a very interesting goodie; good for all ages.  So go out there and make friends with the raised line drawing board.

A scam alert

Happy holidays everyone!

Hi there!  It’s Donna and thank you for allowing me to come into your inbox.

Today, I’d like to introduce you to my scam alert.

A scam alert

Better not to answer your door to the unknown person

These types of scammers come in all age groups and with limitless types of requests.  Now it is up to you to use your judgement and go with your gut instinct.

They could be anyone from the youngest to the oldest.

They could be selling small appliances and electronics.

They could be insurance sales persons.

They could be someone offering to do your taxes.

Just remember!  These types of scammers do not have a specific age.  Adults often use children to help them carry out their unhealthy deeds.

What’s the risk of opening your door to an unknown caller?

You take your future and your life into your hands.

Until next week then!

Privacy protection

Happy holidays everyone!

Hi there!  It’s Donna and thank you for allowing me to come into your inbox.

Today, I’d like to introduce you to my tip on privacy protection.

Privacy protection

You are planning to open banking accounts

The safest way for you to ensure that your personal banking details are kept private and confidential is for you to visit your bank and enlist the help of bank staff.

They will help you and you need not worry about your privacy being compromised.

You may want to see if they could provide you with electronic documentation but this should not be counted on.

The safest piece of advice that I can offer is for you to be stubborn and demand electronic documentation.  This is what I had to do several times.

Meet the light detector

Hi there!  It’s Donna and thank you for allowing me to come into your inbox.

Today, I’d like to talk about the light detector.

Meet the light detector

Well, here is a very nifty little gadget that I happened upon some time ago.  It is extremely simple to use.  All you do is flick a switch and voila!

The lower the pitch of the buzz the less light there is and the higher the pitch the more light there is.  So how do you use this?  Very easy!

All you do is to flick the switch and then aim the light detector towards the spot where you would like to know if there is light.  This little gadget works by battery.

Now, I will also tell you that there is now an app for your IPhone or IPad that also works in the same way.  Just install the light detector app, then go to it and do the double tap.  It works in exactly the same way as my little gadget.

Enjoy and just go out there and make friends with the light detector.

That’s it from me for this week.

Hi there!  It’s Donna and thank you for allowing me to come into your inbox.

Today, I’d like to introduce you to my scam alert.

A scam alert

The one who shows up at your door advertising their cleaning services

What these scammers are counting on is that you are probably very desperate to find someone to provide you with cleaning services because you are just a bit too busy to clean for yourself.  You are a busy person at home and at work and this is what these types of scammers are counting on when you open the door to them.

They come with flyers in hand.

They tell you how they can clean your home for a reasonable  rate.

They offer all kinds of great services to clean your home from top to bottom.

Anything from floors to carpets, and from windows to ceiling, and every room in the house.  They even clean cabinets and cupboards.

They even often to do it at any hour of day, at your convenience, and they promise fast and thorough services.

Ignore them and shut the door on them.

What happens if you do not ignore them choosing instead to allow them to come into your home?

Well!  Sooner than later you may experience some sort of burglary or some sort of break in.  It is their chance to case your home as they say and to plan how to break in when you are probably not around.

They are probably not even afraid to confront you face to face when they are ready.

Privacy protection

You have mortgage papers to complete

Yes!  At the best of times, these papers are extremely tedious for anyone to complete let alone a vision impaired person.

So many personal details are required and yes!  Your date of birth is required.

Additionally, other personal details such as banking info.

Warning!  If your date of birth falls into the wrong hands then just imagine what the one who stumbles on it can do with it!

They can use your date of birth to help themselves to your personal details and there goes your privacy and independence.

You could ask your real estate agent to provide you with the necessary papers in an electronic format so that you could at least read it for yourself but when it comes to the completion of the necessary forms then here is where you would most likely need sighted assistance.

The safest thing to do would be for you to ask your real estate agent to read them to you and if not, you need to find a trusted person; friend or family member or neighbour.

That’s it from me for this week.

Donna

pletion of an application for CPP or Old Age

Sure!  You are told that you can do this online but as of now the website is not user friendly enough for you to do this.

So what do you do?

You need to go to your nearest Service Canada office.

Take a trusted friend, family member, or neighbour with you.

Upon arrival, let the agent know that you wish them to assist you complete your forms.

They may ask the one accompanying you to assist but be firm and let them know that you wish them to help you.

Take your Social Insurance Number card so that you can show it to them and any other photo ID in case you are asked for this.

Take your cheque book along with you so that they can take the info from your cheque to complete the form.

Meet the Talking First Aid Kit

Hi there!  It’s Donna and thank you for allowing me to come into your inbox.

Today, I’d like to talk about the Talking First Aid Kit

Meet the Talking First Aid Kit

Carl Augusto of theAmerican Foundation for the Blind Blogposted the following about this great product.

I think it’s always important to keep safety in mind, so I thought I’d let you know about a new product from intelligentFirstAidT, the First Aid “talking” Kit. The Kit includes nine injury-specific packs to help treat common injuries, including Bleeding, Head & Spine Injury, and Shock. The packs are individually labeled and color-coded, which I love because it would help someone with low vision easily distinguish the packs. The best part, though, is that with the pressof a button, the audio component attached to each card provides step-by-step instructions to manage the wound. Situations often become chaotic when a loved one, an acquaintance, or even you, experiences a minor injury. With this tool, people with low vision can remain calm and have an idea of how to handle things without worrying about reading any print.

Check out the intelli gent FirstAidT website to purchase the product or get more information:

http://www.intelligentfirstaid.com/index.php

The site even allows you to listen to a sample of the audio component of the kit.

A scam alert

Hi there!  It’s Donna and thank you for allowing me to come into your inbox.

Today, I’d like to introduce you to my scam alert.

A scam alert

A phone call asking you to verify your credit card details.

This is probably one of the most common types of phone scams and no one can never be reminded too many times as it is so very easy to believe these types of requests.

The one thing to remember is that these types of phone calls usually come in the form of voice recordings.  You will probably never receive this type of call with a live person at the other end.

Here are some facts for you to keep in mind.

You are told that your credit rating needs to be updated.

You are presented with a list of options to choose from.

You are asked to verify the type of credit card that you presently own.

You are asked to give your credit card number either by entering it using your phone’s keypad or by speaking it.

You are asked to give the 3 digit security code at the back of the card either by entering it on your phone’s keypad or by speaking it.

You are asked for your date of birth and given the choice of either entering it on your phone’s keypad or by speaking it.

Do not respond to this!

Hang up immediately.

What happens if you fall into this trap and provide information that is being requested?

Well!  Much sooner than later your credit card will be hijacked and before you know it someone will be using it to make unauthorized purchases.

That’s it from me for this week.

If you would like to become a member of  my CCB Mysteries chapter you can do so for the price of $10 annually and in return you will receive unlimited access to either of the following libraries.

from Fred’s Head

In this day of high-tech gadgets and MP3 players, it’s nice to see an old favorite still has a chance to be cool. I have a deep love for record players, my parents got one for me when I was a very young child and I’ve owned one all my life. I have tons of records and wouldn’t give them up for the world. I’m thinking I may have to have one of these too.

The Crosley Revolution turntable truly fits the word in every way. Where other turntables take up space, this one dances around a desk without ado.

Where other record players must be kept in their designated place, the Revolution practically begs to join you on every journey. And where other turntables tangle you in a web of wires, the Revolution effortlessly pairs with any FM radio for cordless, clear sound.

It is a turntable of firsts-the first battery-powered Crosley turntable, the first with a platter smaller than a teacup saucer, and the first with a wireless transmitter for cord-free enjoyment. Users can tote this two-speed turntable with them to vinyl swaps or to a friend’s house. Featuring a USB hookup for easy analog-to-digital transfer, the Revolution will allow users to free their favorites from the grooves for digital enjoyment across a variety of devices. This small but mighty turntable also features a headphone jack, passive audio out, and a dynamic full range speaker.

Includes a software Suite For Ripping And Editing Audio Content Belt Driven Turntable Mechanism plays 2 Speeds, 33 1/3 And 45 RPM Records.

Now if we could only do something for packing all those records around!

the cost is $149.95.

A scam alert

Hi there!  It’s Donna and thank you for allowing me to come into your inbox.

Today, I’d like to introduce you to my scam alert.

A scam alert

Those emails asking you to login and verify your username and password that appears to be coming from your bank or insurance company.

If the email in question that you have received seems to be from a bank or insurance company that you do not do business with then you are okay.  Just delete it and move on.

On the other hand if the email in question is from a bank or insurance company that you do business with; then by all means you can read it but my advice would be to also delete it.

No bank or insurance company would ever send you this type of email.

Not sure?  Then just visit your bank.

Ask them to verify that they never sent you such an email.

You could also call to verify as well.

Some of these types of emails may also go as far as to ask you to provide such details as your date of birth and account number.

Just delete this email and move on.

What would happen if you were to respond?

The simple answer would be trouble, lots of trouble, and now you have given a scammer out there carte blanche to hack into either your bank account and/or your very own computer system.

That’s it from me for this week.

Privacy protection

Hi there!  It’s Donna and thank you for allowing me to come into your inbox.

Privacy protection

We are constantly striving to protect ourselves from scams and scammers, but most of all we need to ensure that our privacy, confidentiality, and independence are kept safe from prying eyes and those who thrive on destroying our right to these precious commodities.

Completion of income tax forms

In most cases we need to provide our accountants with such things as tax receipts and statements from our banking institution and we need to ensure that we provide the correct and appropriate paper work to our accountant.

How do we do this if we are vision impaired?

If we have a scanner, then for much of the time we can use our scanners to read our statements but what if the print on these documents is either faded or sometimes there is handwriting?

Well!  We need to find a trustworthy person to help us out.  It must be someone that we trust; friend, neighbour, or family member.

What if we do not have anyone to help us?

Try going to your banking institution and explain your situation to them.  You would be amazed to find that help is there.

Other actions:

You could ask your banking institution for electronic versions of your statements.

You could also phone those who have sent receipts to you to see if they can also provide electronic versions to you.

Try calling 1800 622 6232 and explain what you are seeking.

This is the Federal Government’s toll free number – 1800 ocanada.
